This past weekend I did makeup for a 10th Anniversary/Vow Renewal. The bride wanted a classic pinup look with red lips and winged liner. Her dress was red with black lace overlay and it came together really nicely.

I created this look to beat the heat of the day since it was a backyard vow renewal and it was hot and humid!

Prepping the skin and doing the eyes: I started with a primer spray to make the makeup last in the heat. I sprayed it on and let it soak into the skin while I worked on the eyes. I applied an eyeshadow primer to make the shadows last all day, then I applied a matte shadow in a pale cream shade to the bride’s eyes from lash line to brow. I applied a shimmery champagne colour all over the lid and in the inner corners of the eyes. I blended a soft brown shadow in the crease to give the eyes some depth, as well as along the lower lash line. Then I applied a winged liner with an angled liner brush. I added a touch of black liner to the upper waterline and applied black mascara on the upper lashes. I didn’t apply lashes because she wasn’t set on them, but you definitely could!

Face: I applied a mattifying primer to the face with a damp blending sponge. I used a peachy colour corrector to get rid of any darkness under the eyes, and added a darker cream foundation under the cheekbones and jawline and blended it with the sponge to softly contour. I used a sponge to press foundation into the skin. Pouncing the sponge or pressing the foundation into the skin helps it blend nicely and not streak, or mess up the colour correcting underneath. Next I applied some concealer under the eyes to brighten that area a bit more. I added a cream blush to her cheeks, then I set everything with powder. I still used the damp sponge to do this, as it really helps powder not look “cakey.” Next I used a powder blush over where I applied the cream blush to give it more staying power. I added a soft powder contour to the cheeks and jawline and temples using my contour palette, and used that same palette to highlight the top of the cheekbones. I was going for a matte look to fight any shine from the heat, so adding contour, highlight, and blush really helps to make the face look less flat.

Baking the Face: Once I was done with the face I added a lot of powder under the eyes where the concealer was and where I used cream blush and contour shades. If you apply a lot of extra powder, you trap the cream products underneath against your hot skin and it warms up with your skin temperature. This “bakes” the makeup on your face and helps it look really flawless and last longer without creasing. Leave it for 5-10 minutes. I did this while I worked on the lips, because red lips are a work of art and take a few minutes. After I finished the lips and any last minute eye touch-ups, I used a fluffy brush to sweep the extra powder away.

Lips: I used a true red lip liner to line the lips and fill them in as a first layer of red. Next I used a brush and three shades of red I like to mix to create the perfect red lipstick. I kept these on hand with the brush for later in the afternoon to touch up her lips as it wore off.

Finishing Touches: I filled in the brows with an ashy blonde brow product that is a cream/gel type product that dries and keeps the brows in place! Then I applied a coat of waterproof mascara topcoat to the lashes to prevent the mascara from smudging in the heat – and in case of crying of course! I swept the remaining powder away for the spots I was baking and then I sprayed the entire face with a matte setting spray to keep everything lasting, and not getting shiny. All these techniques helped the makeup stay for the entire party – other than those pesky red lips, which I did touch up once. I need to find the perfect red liquid lipstick!

I hope you give this look a try sometimes. It’s so classic and beautiful, and you feel so awesome when you’re rocking it!
