With all the economic uncertainty happening recently, it’s nice to hear some good news as well. Residents of Oshawa and surrounding areas are soon going to have something to celebrate, as a new indoor farmer’s market has been announced to be in construction, with an anticipated opening date of this fall.

As we’ve been told to self-isolate for the past several months, a farmer’s market is typically known as a way of bringing community together. Something we could all use right about now. Shoppers will be able to pick up fresh, local produce, meat, and cheese with the assurance of knowing where it came from, how it was harvested, and meet the individuals who actually farmed it.

The added benefit of building this in the original downtown core, is that it will be a focal point to draw people to this area, bringing much needed foot and bike traffic back who hopefully will also spend some money at other local establishments.

The former 11.000-sq-ft Royal Bank building at the corner of Simcoe North and Bond West will be the new home to this modern year-round market, that is also expected to include a cafe, brewery, and a space for local entertainment.

The development is being spearheaded by B.I.G. Renovation and Development, who purchased the building last year, and are known for working with local contractors throughout the building process. The company was founded by Alexis Kofman, and are known for their commercial development, multi-residential development, lease-ups, retrofitting, gentrification, project management, consulting, and single family real-estate investments.  Vendor applications are now being accepted, and inquiries should be addressed to admin@bigrenoanddesign.com

With an anticipated 5,000 new residential units being planned for downtown Oshawa, this will be a much needed destination to focus on the live local, shop local concept. Mural design is being orchestrated by Oshawa art gallery/studio space The Paint Factory, who specialize in graffiti art and wall murals.
