Join the “Together We Rise Durham” Black History Month Committee February 1, 2022 at 7 p.m. for a live virtual celebration of Black achievements that recognizes local health-care heroes in Durham Region. The “Together We Rise Durham” Black History Month Committee is hosting a live panel discussion that will celebrate Black achievements and focus on local health-care heroes.

Together We Rise Durham is a partnership between Durham Regional Police (DRPS), the Region of Durham, the Canadian Jamaican Club of Oshawa, DurhamONE, the Congress of Black Women—Oshawa/Whitby and The Power To Be International.

This year’s theme is “Celebrating Black Achievements in Durham Region,” and includes a panel discussion with health-care professionals, including Dr. Adwoa Amamoo; Registered Nurse Natasha Gray; President of the Jamaican Canadian Association of Nurses Jacqueline Chen; and Advanced Care Paramedic Jamere Bembridge. This resilient panel will discuss their experiences during the pandemic.

The celebration will be streamed on February 1, 2022 at 7 p.m. and will feature a talented group of performers and an engaging panel discussion, the video celebrates Black culture, community and allies.

Sport Durham is committed to diversity and inclusion in all activities and advocacy where voice lends strength. During Black History Month, the organization will honour local Black athletes and their contributions to sport here in Durham Region and beyond. An outstanding number of high-performance Black athletes have proudly represented the region.
Seeing other athletes who come from the same place can be inspiring and motivating. The organization hopes to encourage our community’s next wave of Black athletes and help them see all that is possible by spotlighting just a few success stories from Durham Region.
Learn the story of Bernie Saunders (Ajax) who became only the fifth Black hockey player in the NHL. Read his book entitled, Shut Out. Also, learn more about his brother John who left hockey and became a beloved ESPN sportscaster. Follow and talk about current local athletes, including decathlete Pierce LePage (Whitby), soccer players Nichelle Prince (Ajax), Jayde Riviere (Pickering), Derek Cornelius (Ajax) and Deandre Kerr (Ajax), basketball players Cory Joseph (Pickering) and Shaina Pellington (Pickering) to name but a few.
