Courtice resident Hamlin Grange has been appointed to the Order of Canada for his pioneering work in diversity and inclusion, and as a passionate change agent for social justice.

“We are so proud to have a Clarington trailblazer honoured for his efforts to create a welcoming community where differences are celebrated, and the voices of all peoples are heard,” said Clarington’s Diversity Advisory Committee Chair Meera McDonald.

For many years, Grange has worked to create equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives in a wide range of organizations. He has advised the Stratford Festival on diversity and was a member of the Toronto Police Services Board and Chair of the Responsible Gambling Council, to name just a few. Grange has received many awards for his professional and volunteer efforts, including the recently announced appointment to the Order of Canada. 

“The Order of Canada is one of our country’s highest honours. On behalf of Clarington, I want to congratulate Hamlin Washington Grange and thank him for his extraordinary efforts to make our community and our country better,” said Mayor Adrian Foster.

Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, announced 99 new appointments – four from the Region of Durham – to the Order of Canada on December 29, 2022. The Governor General makes appointments on the recommendation of the Advisory Council for the Order of Canada. Since its creation in 1967, the Order of Canada has honoured people whose service has shaped our society, whose innovations have ignited our imaginations, and whose compassion has united our communities. The new appointees will be invited to an investiture ceremony to receive their insignia.
